College Magazine Analysis

My analysis of a College magazine is on College Lifestyle Magazine. The target audience appears to be A and B, due to the fact that the model in the centre of the cover is carrying books on law, business and society which are classed as academic subjects. The books imply along with the other magazine features that it is an academic College which teach subjects which rely heavily on revision from textbooks rather than vocational subjects which just rely on practical exams. Therefore, this college will appeal to Aspirers and Succeeders who want to have the rich and luxurious lifestyles by getting the qualifications from more logical subjects like Law and Business. From my own understanding I believe they chose a model from a different nationality to show how the division between social classes and races are breaking down as society is becoming more modern. Also, the model appears to be an example of a typical middle class student as he is wearing smart/casual clothing. The magazine has only used very few colours; white, lime green and pink. The green has been used to show each individual information section; this stands out from the rest of the cover and shows they are the main sections. White has been used to give a brief description of each section and pink has only been used once to show a competition for paintballing, the style has been shown as a paint splat to go with the theme of paintballing. The singular use of pink makes the competition stand out from the rest of the magazine cover and immediately draws your eyes to that particular section. The font used is simple and easily readable and has been placed around the model in the centre of the magazine, the readers eyes are than drawn around the whole of the magazine cover. The other magazine features shown on the cover support my idea that the target audience is middle class and upwards as one of the features is promoting the “blackberry” phone, this make of phone is known to be very expensive and contains certain features such as a personal planner which are normally associated with middle class and up. The other feature “make money on campus” also implies the target audience are Aspirers as they would have an entrepreneur mind-set and want to make money to suit their desire to have a rich lifestyle.

Preliminary Questionaire Analysis

Evaluation of College Magazine Questionnaire
To research into College Magazines I designed and distributed a college magazine questionnaire. I found that over 50% of those surveyed do not currently read the college magazine. Many of the comments said that they found it boring, it lacks creativity and it does not appeal to them, this suggests that the current format of the college magazine does not work and is not reaching its attended audience.
The four main subjects that were most popular in the questionnaire were; sports, music, college events and jobs. This gives me a good idea as to the type of things people want to see in the magazine as they are more interested in current events such as gigs and any job listings that are available. I also discovered that most people were prepared to pay 50p for the college magazine, I had the idea to have the first issue of the magazine for free so College students are then able to read the first issue and then decide if they would want to read any future issues, if this is the case I will then start charging 50p each issue. I think the best option for the college would be to publish it every fortnight; the reason being is so the magazine can be updated easily to notify the readers of any new gigs or local events that have been announced this is the same for any new jobs or sports tournaments the college teams are participating in.
Most people said their favourite thing about college is break times so this gives me a starting point to advertise the magazine by leaving posters in the popular areas of college e.g. the common room, skills, T Mobile and the smokers shed. 70% of people said they would not subscribe to the magazine a way to change people’s minds would be to give certain privileges to anyone that does subscribe, certain offers could include making the price of the magazine half price or giving subscribers first chance at college party tickets. These offers would allow my magazine to appeal to a larger audience which means more profit for the magazine.
